For Caitlyn Tautant, construction has always been more than just a job—it’s a legacy. Growing up, she watched her father build a career in the trades, first in the field and later as a business representative in the local office. Seeing firsthand the opportunities that construction could offer, she decided to follow in his footsteps. She began her career as a Union apprentice flooring installer, working her way through a five-year apprenticeship all the while taking intermittent time away for two different pregnancies.
After completing her apprenticeship, Caitlyn climbed the ranks to journeyman status, running smaller jobs and managing crews. With eight years of hands-on experience in the field, she honed her skills and built strong relationships with other tradespeople. But eventually, she was ready for a new challenge.
That challenge came when a position opened in the Sonus Interiors office. Now, after six months as a Flooring Estimator, Caitlyn is embracing a whole new side of the construction industry. While the transition has been a major career shift, her Union field experience and relationships with crews have given her a unique advantage in her new role. She understands not only the materials and labor that go into a project but also the day-to-day realities of installation—allowing her to approach estimating with a practical, real-world perspective.
One of Caitlyn’s most rewarding career moments came early on during the Minnesota State Capital Renovation project. As only the second job site she had ever worked on, it was a defining experience where she learned many of the construction skills she still relies on today. Seeing the MN State Capital building transform from a dusty construction site to a polished, finished space solidified her passion for the industry.
Like many women in construction, Caitlyn has faced challenges along the way. Starting out as an 18-year-old apprentice, she often found herself underestimated—whether it was her work ethic, physical strength, or willingness to learn new skills. Rather than letting doubt hold her back, she used it as fuel to prove herself. She worked hard, took on new responsibilities, and steadily moved up in her career.
Over the past eight years, Caitlyn has seen a shift in the industry. More women are stepping into construction roles—not just on job sites but in leadership and management positions. “The industry has become more accepting of women,” she shares. “It’s great to see the growth.” While challenges still exist, she believes the increasing presence of women in the trades is helping to change perspectives and create a stronger, more inclusive workforce.
Her advice for women considering a career in the trades? “Have a good attitude, work hard, and be confident in your abilities.” She also encourages women to build relationships and lean on mentors—both male and female—who will support their growth in the industry.
As Caitlyn continues to grow in her new role at Sonus Interiors, her journey is a powerful reminder that success in construction isn’t one-size-fits-all. Whether in the field or in the office, there are countless opportunities to build a fulfilling career—and Caitlyn is proving that firsthand.
